Ideas for Treats

What is a good treat?  Since they are not going to be getting these in large quantities,
treats do not have to follow the rules surrounding regular food.  They can be a little
fatty, or have a little bit of corn, wheat or soy in small quantities (assuming your dog is
not showing signs of allergies to these grains).  The key here is, your dog should LIKE
them and look forward to getting them.  In other words, if your dogs is not excited about
the treat, its NOT a treat!

What size treat should I offer?  Size is not an issue for dogs.  A half inch treat and a
three inch treat still count as ONE treat.  So, go
SMALL.  As small as you can and still
keep your fingers!  Cut down treats so you can get the most out of each ounce!

When to Give Treats

When you think "treat", think REWARD.  All dogs
need to work for their rewards, and Cattle Dogs
LOVE to do just that!

Sometimes an "'atta boy!" and a pet on the head
will do.  Some dogs will even work for their regular
kibble if the task isn't too hard, but when you are
teaching something new, be prepared to reward
them with something REALLY SPECIAL!

We recommend you have several different types of
treats on hand, and learn what your dog likes and
what s/he really, really LOVES.  That way, you can
reward based on the difficulty of the task and the
quality of the response.  Believe me, your dog
notices!   So, when they do something good, give
them something good, when they do something
outstanding or surprising, pull out the highest
quality treat you have, give several in a row, and
lavish on the praise!
